Marine ply vs commercial ply in Mumbai: what actually matters for kitchens and wardrobes

White Shaker kitchen design inspiration

If you are choosing ply for a Mumbai kitchen or wardrobe, you will hear two labels again and again: marine ply and commercial ply. Homeowners usually ask which is “better.” The workshop answer is more useful: better for which part of the unit, in which room, against how much moisture.

Mumbai’s coastal air and long monsoon mean moisture is not a rare accident — it sits in kitchens near the sink and hob, in bathrooms adjoining bedrooms, on external walls, and in poorly ventilated flats. That is why carcass board choice matters more here than in a dry inland climate.

This guide explains, in plain workshop terms:

Finished installs (material sits behind the finish)

Carcass vs shutters: two different jobs

Before comparing ply grades, separate the two layers of a cabinet or wardrobe.

Carcass (the box)

The carcass is the structural box: sides, top, bottom, back (or back panel), shelves, and partitions. It carries weight, holds hinges and drawer channels, and sits against walls that may be damp, out of plumb, or on an external face.

In workshop terms: if moisture gets past the laminate edge or into an unsealed cut, it is the carcass that swells, delaminates, or loses screw holding. That is why ply grade and thickness for the carcass belong on every honest quote.

Shutters (the faces you see)

Shutters (doors) and drawer fronts are the visible faces — laminate, acrylic, PU, cane, fluted, mirror, and so on. They matter for look, wipe-clean finish, and daily wear. They are not a substitute for a sound carcass. A glossy shutter on a weak box near a sink still fails when the core boards take water.

Practical rule for Mumbai homeowners: discuss shutters for design; discuss carcass grade for longevity — especially in kitchens and in wardrobes on external walls or next to bathrooms. The grade name BWP, and where it earns its cost, is on BWP plywood for monsoon kitchens. If the quote is arguing fibreboard against ply, read MDF vs plywood and HDHMR vs plywood.

Shutter finish is a separate decision from carcass grade. See laminate vs acrylic for Mumbai kitchens. Hinges and drawer channels are covered in kitchen and wardrobe hardware.

Wet zones in a typical Mumbai flat

“Wet zone” is not only the bathroom. In our work, we treat these as higher moisture risk:

  1. Kitchen sink base units — splash, drip from washing, occasional leaks at the trap
  2. Hob / chimney run — heat, steam, oil vapour; boards need clean edges and proper sealing
  3. Dishwasher or washing-machine alcoves (if in the kitchen or utility) — condensation and spill risk
  4. Wardrobes on external walls — coastal humidity and monsoon damp through plaster; AC drip risk on some elevations
  5. Wardrobes adjoining bathrooms — vapour through shared walls if ventilation is weak
  6. Under-sink plumbing voids and skirting / toe-kick areas — where water sits unnoticed

Commercial ply used thoughtfully in a dry internal wardrobe run is a different conversation from commercial ply under an open sink. Ask your carpenter to zone the quote: which carcasses are marine / moisture-resistant grade, and which are commercial, if mixed.

Marine ply vs commercial ply — workshop comparison

Labels vary by mill and supplier. Do not treat a sticker alone as a guarantee. Ask what grade name, thickness, and intended use (carcass vs shutter core) are written on your quote — and ask to see board stamps or samples at the site visit.

What homeowners usually mean

TopicMarine ply (as commonly specified for Mumbai joinery)Commercial ply (as commonly specified)
Typical use in our quotesKitchen carcasses; wet-zone bases; sometimes wardrobe carcasses on high-humidity wallsInternal wardrobe carcasses in drier rooms; some dry storage; cost-sensitive runs where moisture risk is low
Moisture behaviour (practical)Built and chosen for higher moisture resistance in humid / splash-prone workFine when kept dry and well edged; ages poorly if water reaches the core repeatedly
Cost positionHigher board cost → moves the kitchen/wardrobe quote upLower board cost → can keep a quote closer to the starting band
What it does not doIt is not waterproof forever if edges are open, cuts are unsealed, or a leak sits for weeksIt is not “bad wood” by default — it is the wrong default for sink bases and chronic damp walls

Honest limits: We do not invent lab ratings, brand league tables, or city-wide “average ply prices” on this page. Performance depends on board quality from the supplier, thickness, edge banding / sealing, installation detailing, and how the room is used. A measured site visit is where we match grade to your walls and wet zones.

Thickness (what to expect on quotes)

Common carcass thicknesses in Mumbai modular work are often discussed in the 16 mm / 18 mm / 19 mm band (exact stock depends on supplier). Thicker is not automatically “marine.” Grade and thickness are separate lines on a good quote. A thin marine-labelled board and a thick commercial board are not interchangeable answers.

Ask:

Mumbai monsoon and humidity — practical workshop terms

We do not need dramatised weather stats. In the workshop and on site, humidity shows up as:

What reduces risk (standard good practice, not a miracle claim):

Marine ply helps the board resist moisture better than a basic commercial carcass in those conditions. It does not replace plumbing repairs or sealing. Practical upkeep through the rains is on monsoon care for kitchens and wardrobes in Mumbai.

Common myths

  1. “Marine ply means the kitchen can never get wet.” False. It is more moisture-resistant for carcass work — not a submarine. Leaks still need fixing; edges still need sealing.
  2. “If the shutter is acrylic or PU, the ply grade does not matter.” False. Shutters are the face. The box behind still faces humidity and screw loads.
  3. “Commercial ply is always a scam.” False. It can be appropriate for dry internal storage when the quote is clear. Problems start when commercial carcass is used as a silent default under sinks to win a lump-sum bid.
  4. “Thicker board automatically means marine grade.” False. Thickness and grade are different. Read both on the quote.
  5. “One grade for the whole house is the only professional way.” Not always. Zoning (marine / moisture-resistant in wet areas; commercial in confirmed dry runs) can be rational if it is written clearly and you agree. Hidden mixes are the problem.
  6. “The cheapest quote used the same ply as the expensive one.” Often false. Ask for grade + thickness per area. Lump sums hide substitutions.

How material choice moves the quote

Mumbai Master Carpentry does not sell a “ply-only package” on this page. Ply is one line inside a kitchen or wardrobe job.

On our site, indicative starting bands are:

Those figures are starting bands for finished joinery, not the price of a sheet of ply. Choosing marine / moisture-resistant carcass for wet zones (or for a full kitchen run), thicker board, better sealing, and stronger hardware moves the quote up from the band. Choosing commercial carcass only where moisture risk is low can keep a wardrobe quote closer to the starting band — when that choice is explicit.

Full-home carpentry packages on our site typically start from ₹55,000 — again indicative, after scope discussion.

Final pricing always follows a free measured site visit. Do not treat Instagram “per sq ft ply rates” as a bill.

How to read a quote: thickness, grade, and wet zones

Ask every carpenter for an itemised note covering:

  1. Carcass grade — marine / moisture-resistant / commercial (use the supplier’s actual grade name on the paper)
  2. Carcass thickness — base, wall, wardrobe sides, shelves (mm)
  3. Where each grade is used — full kitchen? sink bases only? all wardrobes? external-wall units only?
  4. Edge banding / sealing — especially sink cut-outs and pipe holes
  5. Shutter material — separate from carcass (laminate, acrylic, PU, etc.)
  6. Hardware — hinge and channel grade (soft-close or not)
  7. Backs and partitions — same grade as sides or thinner commercial backs?
  8. Warranty — what workmanship covers if moisture-related failure appears; what is excluded (active leaks, client damage)

Red flags

Compare like with like. A low total that silently uses commercial carcass under the sink is not the same job as a marine carcass kitchen at a higher number.

FAQ

Not always. Many internal bedroom wardrobes can use a commercial or mid-grade carcass if the wall is dry and ventilated. External-wall runs, units next to bathrooms, or rooms with known damp deserve a moisture-resistant discussion on site. Ask for grade and thickness on the quote either way.

Some quotes use commercial carcass to hit a low lump sum. For sink bases and steam-heavy runs in Mumbai, we usually advise against treating commercial ply as the silent default. If budget is tight, ask for an honest zone mix in writing — not an unmarked substitution. Our kitchen work starts from an indicative ₹85,000 band for a simple straight run; carcass grade is one reason quotes move up from that band.

No. It is chosen for better moisture resistance in humid and splash-prone carcass work. Open edges, unsealed cut-outs, and unrepaired leaks still cause damage. Good detailing matters as much as the label on the board.

Ask for carcass thickness in millimetres on the quote (sides, shelves, backs). Common modular carcass stock is often in the mid-teens mm band, but stock varies by supplier. Do not assume “thicker = marine.” Read grade and thickness as separate lines.

Not typically described that way. Board grade is one cost driver among layout length, shutters, hardware, and site conditions. On Mumbai Master Carpentry’s site, kitchens start from ₹85,000 and wardrobes from ₹22,000 as indicative bands — material choice moves the quote; it is not a separate ply-only package price.

Ask to see board stamps or delivery challans at the workshop or site, and keep grade + thickness on the signed quote. Visit the workshop if you want — ours is open for client visits by arrangement (Mon–Sat). Clear paperwork beats verbal “premium ply” claims.
