Kitchen and wardrobe hardware in Mumbai: hinges, channels, and soft-close
Hinges, drawer channels, and soft-close are where two “same size” kitchens or wardrobes stop being the same job. The shutter colour is what you see in a photo. The hardware is what you feel every day — and what a lump sum most easily hides.
This guide is for Mumbai flats: modular kitchens and built-in wardrobes. It explains the hardware families in plain workshop language, how to read a brand name without treating it as a ranking, and how soft-close moves a quote. It does not invent a partnership or an exclusive range.
Shutters are a different decision: laminate vs acrylic. The board they hang on is another: marine ply vs commercial ply. Cost context sits in the kitchen cost guide and the wardrobe cost guide.
Drawers and shutters that depend on the hardware
Licensed stock photos, not completed client projects. Hardware grade is what the quote should name, not what a stock photo happens to show.

What actually gets specified
On a kitchen or wardrobe we are usually talking about three groups:
- Hinges — they hang the shutter and decide how it closes
- Drawer channels — side-mounted or hidden, with or without a damper
- The rest — handles or handleless profiles, hanging rods, shelf pins, and, on sliding wardrobes, a track and rollers
Soft-close is a damper, not a brand. It slows the last part of the movement so the door or drawer does not slam. A basic hinge from a well-known maker is still a basic hinge. A soft-close hinge from a lesser-known maker can still be the right specification if the series and the duty are written down.
Brand names, without a fake exclusive
On Mumbai quotes you will often see Hettich, Häfele (also written Hafele), Ebco, Godrej, and sometimes Blum. Those are hardware makers sold through dealers. The list is not a ranking, not a review, and not a statement that one of them is “the” workshop brand.
Mumbai Master Carpentry is not an exclusive stockist, authorised showroom, or sole dealer for any of them. We do not claim a private range. We specify the maker and the series (or the duty, if the series name is awkward) on the itemised quote after the site visit, and that is what gets fitted. If you want a particular series, say so before the quote is approved. If a maker offers its own warranty, that warranty is the maker’s terms. We do not extend it, and we do not reprint it as if it were ours.
A logo in a brochure is not the series on the hinge cup. “Hettich hinges” with no series can still be a standard hinge. Ask for the line that will be on the bill: maker, soft-close or not, and whether drawers are side channels or undermount.
Hinges
Modular shutters usually hang on clip-on concealed hinges, so a door can come off for fitting and adjustment. The details that change the quote and the gap are:
- Standard vs soft-close. Standard hinges rely on you catching the door. Soft-close hinges have a damper in the cup or on the arm.
- Overlay. Full overlay, half overlay, and inset doors need different hinge geometry. The gap you see between doors comes from this, not from the laminate colour.
- Count. A small door and a tall pantry shutter are not the same hinge schedule. Tall, heavy shutters need more hinges. The drawing or the quote should not leave that as “as required” with no number.
- What they screw into. A good hinge in a soft, wet carcass edge will loosen. Carcass grade still matters. Read the ply guide if the sink run is the debate.
Drawer channels
Channels are the slides. In practice, Mumbai kitchen quotes fall into three groups:
| Detail | Side roller channel | Ball-bearing telescopic | Undermount soft-close |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you see it | Side of the drawer box | Side of the drawer box | Hidden under the drawer |
| Daily feel | Adequate for light drawers. More play and rattle as they age if they are a light duty. | Smoother, better when the drawer holds plates, pots, or a full pantry load. | Quiet and hidden. The drawer box has to be built for that system. |
| Cost position | Usually the lower line | Mid line; soft-close versions cost more than plain bearing slides | Usually the dearer drawer line |
A drawer of spices and a drawer of pressure-cooker vessels are not the same duty. Ask what the channel is rated for in ordinary language (light, regular kitchen load, or heavy) and whether soft-close is on every drawer or only the ones in the render.
Baskets, tandem pull-outs, and corner units are accessories on top of the channel. They should be their own lines. “Soft-close kitchen” does not mean the corner unit is included.
Wardrobes and sliding doors
A hinged wardrobe uses the same hinge conversation as a kitchen, plus drawer channels if there are drawers. A sliding wardrobe is a different hardware family: top track or bottom track, rollers, and sometimes a soft-close damper on the roller. Do not compare a sliding-track price with a hinge price and call them the same specification.
Loft shutters above a wardrobe may be hinged, lift-up, or sliding. Stays that hold a lift-up flap are a hardware line too. They are not inside the ₹22,000 hinged starting band. See loft storage in Mumbai.
How hardware moves the quote
There is no hardware-only price list on this site.
- Kitchens start from ₹85,000 for a roughly 10 ft straight run. Soft-close hinges, better channels, pull-outs, and baskets move that band up. The figure is not a soft-close package.
- Wardrobes start from ₹22,000 for a roughly 6×8 ft hinged unit. Soft-close, extra drawers, and sliding rollers move it up. Loft units are extra.
Both numbers are Mumbai Master Carpentry indicative starting bands, not city averages. Final pricing follows a measured visit. The kitchen cost guide and wardrobe cost guide list the other drivers: layout, ply, shutters, and site packing.
What to demand on the quote
- Hinge maker and whether soft-close is included, and on which shutters
- Channel type: roller, ball-bearing telescopic, or undermount — and soft-close or not
- Drawer count, and which drawers are baskets or pull-outs
- For sliding doors: track, roller, top-hung or bottom-rolling, soft-close or not
- Who supplies the hardware — us, or you. If you supply it, our workmanship warranty covers the fitting, not a defect in the piece you bought
Our workmanship warranty is 1 year on joints, hinges, drawers, and finish from our work. A channel overloaded with tiles, or a fitting we did not supply and did not specify, is a different conversation. The maker’s own terms, where they exist, stay with the maker.
Visit, then the cutting list
Hardware is chosen with the samples and the drawing, not from a WhatsApp photo of a hinge logo. The steps match our process: free site visit (typically within 48 hours on working days), measurements, an itemised quote, workshop build, installation, and a walkthrough where we check every hinge and drawer.
A kitchen is often about 12–18 days after approval. A single wardrobe is often about 7–10 days. The quote confirms the timeline. Payment on standard jobs is typically 40% advance, 40% on delivery to site, and 20% on handover.

FAQ
No. Those names appear often on Mumbai quotes. We are not an exclusive stockist, authorised showroom, or sole dealer for any of them. We write the maker and the series on the itemised quote, and that is what gets fitted.
No. It is a damper that slows the last part of the close. The makers named on Mumbai quotes sell both basic and soft-close lines. Ask which one is on your quote, door by door and drawer by drawer.
Say what the drawer holds. Light storage can sit on a simpler side channel. Plates, pots, and pantry loads usually want a ball-bearing telescopic or an undermount soft-close slide. The type and whether soft-close is included should be written down.
Those are indicative starting bands: a roughly 10 ft straight kitchen, and a roughly 6×8 ft hinged wardrobe. Soft-close hinges, better channels, pull-outs, and sliding rollers move the quote up. They are not a hidden inclusion and not a separate package price.
One year of workmanship on how we built and fitted the carpentry, including hinges and drawers we installed. A maker’s own warranty, where it exists, stays on the maker’s terms. We do not invent an extended brand warranty. Hardware you supply yourself is covered for our fitting, not for a defect in the piece.
No. Sliding doors need a track and rollers, sometimes with a soft-close damper. Compare track specifications with track specifications, not with a hinge price.
