BWP plywood in Mumbai — waterproof-grade board for kitchens and wet zones
People search for waterproof ply in Mumbai because the monsoon is long and the sink is wet every day. In the trade, BWP means boiling water proof — the high end of moisture resistance, often spoken in the same breath as marine ply. It is a board grade. It is not a waterproof kitchen, and it is not a coat you can brush onto commercial ply after the quote is signed.

The wider carcass comparison, including when commercial ply is still rational, is marine ply vs commercial ply. This page is the grade name itself: where BWP earns the extra board cost in a monsoon kitchen or a wet wardrobe wall, and where paying for it on every shelf is wasted.
What the word is doing on a quote
Shops use waterproof, marine, BWP, and BWR as if they were one sticker. They are not. BWP is the claim you want written when the box will meet splash and steam. BWR is a step down — boiling-water resistant, not the same sentence. MR or commercial is the dry-interior board. If a supplier also claims a bureau number, that claim belongs on the paper, not in a voice note. We do not certify a stamp from a photograph. We specify the grade we are buying, and you can see the board at the workshop or when it arrives.
Fibreboards are a different family. MDF and HDHMR are not BWP plywood, even when the brochure says waterproof.
Where BWP earns its cost
| Put the higher grade here | Do not pay for it by habit | What BWP still will not do |
|---|---|---|
| Sink base, including the shelf and the back in that box | A dry bedroom wardrobe on an internal wall with no bathroom behind it | It will not survive an open edge or an unsealed pipe hole |
| Hob run that takes steam, and a dishwasher or washing-machine alcove | A loft shelf in a dry room, if the quote shows a cheaper grade on purpose | It will not fix a leaking trap or a damp wall from the flat above |
| Bathroom vanity, utility, and a wardrobe on a wet external or bathroom wall | Every shutter core in the house, when the shutters are only a face | It will not turn a lump-sum “waterproof kitchen” into a specification |
Mixed grades are rational when you can see the mix. A full kitchen in one higher grade is also rational if you would rather not think about zones — it costs more board, and the quote should say that plainly. A hidden mix, marine on the sample and commercial under the sink, is the failure mode.
Thickness is a second number
Common carcass talk in Mumbai modular work sits around 16 mm, 18 mm, and 19 mm. Exact stock depends on the supplier. Thicker is not automatically BWP. A thin BWP side and a thick commercial side are not interchangeable. Ask for grade and thickness on bases, wall units, shelves, and backs. A BWP side with a raw commercial back is a gap water will use.
How to specify BWP on a quote
- Mark the wet boxes. On a sketch, mark the sink base, the hob run, any dishwasher or washing-machine alcove, a bathroom vanity, and any wardrobe on an external or bathroom wall.
- Ask for grade and thickness on those boxes. The quote should name BWP or marine — whichever board is actually being bought — and the thickness in millimetres, separately from dry runs.
- Ask whether shelves, backs, and partitions match. A BWP side with a thin commercial back and a raw shelf is not a BWP box. Those parts are separate lines.
- Ask how cut-outs are sealed. Sink, pipe, and hob cuts need a sealed edge. An open saw-cut drinks monsoon air no matter what the stamp on the sheet says.
- Match the lines before you match the total. Compare two quotes only after wet-zone grade, thickness, and sealing say the same thing. Then look at the number.
Our indicative kitchen band starts at ₹85,000 for a roughly 10 ft straight run. That figure is not a BWP package and not a city average. Specifying the higher grade on wet boxes moves the quote up from the band. The kitchen cost guide and the quote checklist carry the other lines — hardware, shutters, installation.
What to do after it is installed
BWP does not ask for a special monsoon ritual. It asks you not to store a wet mop in the sink unit, and to fix a drip while it is a drip. If an edge band lifts onto a still-firm core, that is often a small repair. If the board is soft, the grade on the original quote matters, because a soft commercial box was a different promise from a soft BWP box with an open cut. Care and the early signs are on monsoon furniture care.
Workmanship on what we build is covered for one year — see warranty. A plumbing leak is not a board defect. We will say which one we are looking at.

FAQ
In shop talk they are often used as one idea: the higher moisture-resistant plywood. They are not automatically the same sheet. Ask for the grade name that will be bought, in writing. If the quote says marine in one place and BWP in another, make them reconcile it before you sign.
No. BWP is a board grade with high moisture resistance. Open edges, unsealed cut-outs, and a leak that sits for weeks will still damage it. We do not sell a waterproof kitchen.
No. Use it on a wardrobe that sits on a damp external wall or shares a wall with a bathroom. A dry internal bedroom can be a different grade if that is explicit on the quote.
That is the wrong way around. The carcass is what meets the leak. A fancy shutter on a commercial sink box does not upgrade the box. Put the grade in the wet carcass, and choose the shutter face separately.
More than commercial ply of the same thickness, as a board line. We do not publish a per-sheet rate. Mumbai Master Carpentry’s kitchen starting band is ₹85,000 for a roughly 10 ft straight run, before wet-zone upgrades. The measured quote shows the difference.
Yes, that is the usual specification, including a proper back and a sealed pipe cut, unless we have agreed a different named grade for a reason we have written down. Call or WhatsApp +91 9987911330. Workshop: 208, Wakefield House, Ballard Pier, Fort, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400001.
