MDF vs plywood in Mumbai — shutters, shelves, and wet zones
MDF and plywood are not two grades of the same board. MDF is a fibreboard: wood fibres and resin pressed into a slab. Plywood is thin wood veneers glued in crossing layers. In a Mumbai flat the useful question is which parts of the job are fibreboard, and which parts still have to be ply, once monsoon humidity and a wet sponge are in the room.

This page is that split. It is not the carcass-grade comparison between marine and commercial ply — that is marine ply vs commercial ply. It is not the denser board sold as an upgrade on MDF — that is HDHMR vs plywood. The face you see, laminate or veneer, is a third decision on veneer vs laminate.
What each board actually is
Cut an MDF shelf and the edge looks even, with no grain. That evenness is why paint, a routed groove, and a flat laminate press sit well on it. Cut plywood and you see the layers. Those layers are why a screw usually holds, and why a shelf of the same thickness spans further before it sags.
Neither board is “solid wood.” Both need an edge. Both can be the core under a laminate shutter. Only one of them is a sensible structural box next to a sink.
Where Mumbai humidity shows the difference
Humidity here is not a single week of rain. It sits in the air, then spikes when a bathroom stays shut or a sink door is closed on a wet cloth. Moisture enters at a raw edge, a hinge-cup cut, or a pipe hole.
- MDF swells at that edge and often stays swollen. The shutter rubs. The screw hole goes soft. Paint and laminate slow this only when every edge, including the hinge cup, is sealed. They do not make a raw cut waterproof.
- Plywood still needs edge banding. If water does get in, it tends to open along a glue line rather than turn into a sponge. Grade still matters: a commercial ply carcass under a sink is a different risk from a moisture-resistant one. That choice is the marine-ply guide, not a reason to switch the box to MDF.
A moisture-resistant MDF is a better interior board than the cheapest interior MDF. It is still a fibreboard. We do not treat it as the carcass under a sink, beside a hob, or in a bathroom vanity.
Workshop comparison
| MDF | Plywood | |
|---|---|---|
| Make-up | Pressed fibres. Uniform face. No plies. | Cross-laminated veneers. Layered edge. |
| Screw holding | Adequate in sound board, once. A second adjustment in the same hole often strips. | Usually the better hold for hinges and channels you may reset on site. |
| Raw edge in monsoon | Swells and stays thick. Common reason a shutter starts to rub after the rains. | Needs banding too. Failure, when it happens, is more often a split ply than a swollen sponge. |
| Long shelves | Sags sooner if the span is long and the shelf is thin. We add support or change the board. | The usual shelf when the span carries books, vessels, or a stack of plates. |
| Paint and routed detail | The rational choice for a painted or grooved shutter in a dry room. | Can be painted. Grain and ply lines telegraph more unless the face is built for paint. |
| Kitchen carcass | Not our default, including “moisture-resistant MDF” under a sink. | The structural box. Grade and thickness are then written separately. |
We do not publish a rupee gap between a sheet of MDF and a sheet of ply. Sheet rates move, and a kitchen is not a sheet. On our site a modular kitchen starts from an indicative ₹85,000 for a roughly 10 ft straight run, and a wardrobe from ₹22,000 for a roughly 6×8 ft hinged unit. Those are starting bands for finished joinery. Board choice is one reason a quote leaves the band.
Where MDF is a fair specification
- Painted or routed wardrobe shutters in a dry bedroom, edges sealed, including the hinge side
- A flat shutter core under laminate, when the room is dry and the carcass behind it is ply
- A decorative panel or a pelmet that is not holding a hinge you will move twice
Tell us if that bedroom shares a wall with a bathroom or sits on an external face that stays damp after rain. The shutter core can change even when the drawing looks the same. Wardrobe context is on wardrobes in Mumbai.
Where we specify plywood instead
- Kitchen and utility carcasses, especially sink bases and the hob run
- Shelves that carry weight across a wide span
- Any panel that has to hold hinges or channels after the usual site adjustments
- Wardrobe sides on a damp wall — and then we talk grade, not just “ply”
For the wet boxes, the next question is which ply. BWP plywood is the page for that grade name. Commercial ply in a confirmed dry run can still be rational when the quote says so in writing.
How to read “MDF kitchen” on a quote
That phrase often means MDF shutters on a carcass nobody named. Ask for four lines:
- Which parts are MDF — shutters, shelves, or the box
- Whether that MDF is interior or moisture-resistant, in the supplier’s words
- Thickness of the MDF and thickness of the ply, in millimetres
- What the carcass is, by zone, if the box is not MDF
A glossy shutter photo does not answer any of those. Edge banding on the MDF, including inside a hinge boring, belongs on the same quote. If the band is missing, the monsoon will find the core before the colour fades. Day-to-day care after handover is on monsoon care for kitchens and wardrobes.
Myths we hear on site
- “MDF is always the cheap wrong board.” It is the wrong box under a sink. It can be the right painted shutter in a dry room.
- “Moisture-resistant MDF is waterproof.” It resists humidity better than raw interior MDF. It is not a boiling-water-proof plywood, and it is not a licence to leave edges open.
- “Once it is laminated, the core does not matter.” Laminate is the face. Water still enters at a cut.
- “Heavier means stronger.” MDF is often heavier than ply of the same size. Weight is not screw holding, and it is a nuisance on a narrow Mumbai stair.

FAQ
MDF can be a shutter core in a dry run if the edges are sealed. We do not use it as the carcass under a sink, beside a hob, or in a bathroom vanity. The box should be plywood, with the grade written separately.
No. Moisture-resistant MDF is still a fibreboard. Marine or BWP plywood is a different product, used where splash and steam are normal. Read the marine ply guide and the BWP page before you accept one word for both.
A dry internal bedroom with sealed edges usually does not. A raw edge, a bathroom-side wall, or a hinge cup left unsealed can swell and stay swollen. We look at the wall before we lock the shutter core.
Plywood usually holds a hinge or channel screw better, especially if the hinge is adjusted more than once. MDF can hold hardware in sound board. A stripped hole in MDF is harder to rescue.
Often on the shutter line, not as a rule for the whole job. We do not publish a sheet-rate gap. Mumbai Master Carpentry’s indicative starting bands are ₹85,000 for a roughly 10 ft straight kitchen and ₹22,000 for a roughly 6×8 ft hinged wardrobe. The measured quote is the bill.
